Traffic is always the killer of website businesses.

People say it it easy but it’s not for the average business. Traffic is scarce it seems. At least targeted traffic, sure you can buy ads but even that is no guarantee. It takes years to get really good at paid ads.

You can get a little bit but I guarantee you are paying more than an experienced ad manager who knows what to do. All the ad platforms are different and all of them change constantly. It’s a full time job keeping up on what is working with FB ads or Google ads now.

And the price just keeps going up. More competition drives the cost per click through the roof.

So if ads are going to bankrupt you, what’s the answer?

Getting free traffic from search engines

Organic search traffic is free but it does cost you time and money creating content and optimizing your webpages to rank high.

You need traffic or you wont get any results so spending time on optimizing is worth while.

The truth is spending a lot of time doing search optimization is never guaranteed to get you tons of traffic. Even if you get to the top of Google, you are still facing a battle with the Google Maps 3 pack and the ads running on popular keyword search pages. It doesn’t mean you will get that flood of traffic you want.

And a bigger thing to note is just being number one in the listings never guarantees you will see more sales and customers.

Usually your Keyword target is Too Broad.

You need to target keywords that indicate what the person is looking for specifically. Do they want to buy shoes? Do they want to see images of shoes? Are they just looking for what type of shoes are out there? With a broad term like “shoes”, you have no idea what they are aiming to do.

That term may get 1.5 millions searches a month but even if you hit page 2 number 1 and got thousands of clicks, there is no gurarantee you would get new customers and sales. Who knows how many of them want to buy shoes today?

So since they are hard to rank for and you don’t know how to appeal to them, they are rarely profitable or worth chasing.
Avoid Broad Search Terms is the bottom line.

Too Narrow

Choosing a Local based keyword for your business like “Roofer in Mukilteo” might get you local searches but how many surfers are searching for that? Maybe 20 a month if that.

Now that is very specific and limits your customers too much. Unless there are enough potential searches, it is not going to really help you. Besides you will usually rank for an easy keyword term like that with out trying. Google will find that phrase on your page automatically. It just takes a sentence on your page for those easy words. But there is hardly any traffic.

You don’t want to limit your possible customers by going too specific. You don’t have to always think local, would you sell to someone in another county or state?

Businesses often choose the wrong search terms and assume the customer knows what they are looking for. They may not type in the search engine what you think they would.

Here is where paying for a good keyword tool is worthwhile. You can actually see what your prospects are typing in Google. It really helps you find good keywords to target.

People Mess This Up All The Time

You need to research to find these great keywords. Take a few days and start looking in the search engines. What are your competitors using for keywords? Use those, they are proven.


You can’t always make assumptions unless the evidence backs it up. Does anyone who hasn’t heard of you type your business name into Google? Only if you are Ford or Amazon, right?

Most people type a question into Google to solve their current problem. Or they search for a very specific product or type of product.

How do you paint a bathroom?
What is the best way to buy a car?

Your SEO targeting should take into effect what your customers want to learn and know. If they type in this question, you answer it on your web page in detail.

Now seo optimizing means you build your website so it targets the top keywords you want to rank for. Just slapping up keywords and meta tags on your page isn’t going to work.

To rank well, you need to write content that really answers the question people search for.  It is no harder than that. Google wants to send people to a page that gives them what they want. Exactly the right answer with plenty of details. It depends on the question, what you need to create for them. Be helpful, is the key to making this work.

Make that content so good, other people would share it. Then you will never need to worry about another Google update again. All those updates are designed to send people to the best most useful content. Which you will have if you work on it for just a little bit of extra time.

Make content that people would like to read when they land on your web site. Great content gets found and shared. You get more and more traffic. Google sees you are getting traffic and sends you even more.

The slickest websites that try to trick Google with stuffed keywords and tags will be found and removed eventually. And you know Google doesn’t appreciate the tricks.

Remember it’s not just a computer checking out your website, they do have manual reviewers who look and inspect questionable webpages and they can and do REMOVE it from the index.

So How Do You Do It?

You need a Great Structure

Once you have a regular post structure, you can quickly bang out post after post. You just fill in the blanks of your new post.

This is a fast way to build content and lets you do 3 things.

1. Structure makes easy to read articles so people stay longer and actually read your blog post.
2. It is easier to write – you just fill in the blanks with a new topic and give answers.
3. It helps the search engine robot easily crawl your content.

Summary – One short sentence that explains why they should read this post. “You will learn…”, “Read this post to discover…”, “If you are interested in getting ….. you’ll want to read this post”.

Quotes – Search online and find a good related quote and add it to your post with the source of the quote. Give them a little credit it doesn’t need to link back. There is always a fitting quote that makes sense as they read the post. If you do link out to the authority source, it actually can help your SEO. Google likes to see links to other content online. (make sure it opens in a new tab)

Takeaways – Next it is good to tell them 3 key takeaways they will learn below. What are the 3 keys to remember?

Key Point 1 Now you just share a few paragraphs about your 3 points you want them to learn. Don’t leave them hanging, give real answers and solutions. And why it matters. What does it give them?
Key point 2.
Key point 3.

Conclusion – Summarize your post. By answering any objections they might be thinking after reading your key points. What is a possible sticking point and how do they get past it?

Next Steps – Suggest what they can do next to take that answer and run with it. How can they put it to use immediately? What if they want to go further? Now you can offer your help.

With a phrase like this: “If you are serious about this, then you need to …” Now you add a link to your squeeze page, free report, another page that has even more answers or your sales page that offers your amazing solution now.

Post Regularly

You want to have a regular schedule for posting.  People will learn you put out a great post every Tuesday and come back.  The search engines will also come back every week if you have a schedule of fresh content.

This also makes it easier on you.  You know what needs to be done and can plan out your content ahead of time.  It’s easier because you know when the deadline is.  If you plan your topics 4 weeks out, you have time to learn what you need to in order to write a great post.  Research what’s already out there and make a bigger and better post.

You will find the sweet spot for is 1 post a week.  But write 2 each week and you can get ahead of the game. You never know what’s going to come up and stop you from getting your writing done. Having a stockpile never hurts. Think like a TV program, they plan that out for a 3 month season. So you only have to think of 12 topics.

Monday – Brainstorm 5 possible ideas. What are common questions or things they should know but don’t?

Tuesday – Outline your structure for 2 posts. Use the structure we just covered above.

Wednesday – Today you write your first blog post out.

Thursday – Publish that post with a great image as well and be sure to share to your . Twitter and Facebook. Maybe Linkedin. You want the initial burst of traffic so Google finds your post faster.

Friday – Write your second post and schedule it to post at a later date(now you can publish it earlier if you have a week you can’t write)

What do you Write About?

The easy part is usually choosing the topics you cover. Here are 3 good ways to find ideas.

1. Google your industry topics and look at what is being published already.
2. Go to forums, groups and Quora and see what questions people are asking often. Find the most popular ones and answer the question in your post. See what is on Facebook and Linkedin for new ideas to cover.
3. Brainstorm ideas that you can write about. Make a list of topics you will cover and drill down deep for even more.

It is a good practice to forget it all at the end of the week. Toss out your big list and create a new one. This way you stay on top of your industry and keep finding what’s hot at the moment. You want current news and so do your readers. Old rehashed content is just not what readers want.

Don’t worry if it was a great idea you will see it again and can use it then. You will brainstorm every week and get much better ideas. Looking at your old lists can make it hard to find new topics.
