Someone was asking me about Pay per Click advertising over the weekend. She wanted to know how to get started advertising with Google Adwords. Now first a warning. If you jump into this without deciding how much you can afford to LOSE, you will quickly find learning Adwords is very expensive.

But it is too powerful of an advertising tool to avoid for long. Adwords works if you budget and set up your campaign right.

To start with PPC advertising, you will need a list of keyword phrases. Avoid the very general two word phrases, what you want is less competitive longer 3 and 4 word phrases that get some traffic but not a lot of competition advertising on them. Go to the google adwords keyword tool and run your main niche topic. Say Network Marketing. You will get a huge list. What you are looking for are keywords that get about 500 searches a month. Believe me most of the others are too expensive to advertise on.

Now you gather a list of 100 phrases to start with. Don’t load them all into one ad group. Break them up in groups containing the same word in the keyword phrase. Now you are separating them and making your ad more relevant. So similar groups with an ad that has the keyword phrase in it.

You need to have an ad, keyword phrase, and landing page containing this phrase to get a high quality score. High quality score means less expensive clicks for you.

So set up your first campaign and I would budget .32 cents a click and a budget of $50 a day max. to get rolling. With about 100 keywords in the campaign. Then turn it on and watch it for the next few days. Don’t worry, you will rarely hit your $50 ceiling.

If you get a lot of impressions on a keyword but no clicks, pause that keyword so it doesn’t hurt your click thru rate. A good CTR will give you cheaper clicks. 2.5 CTR is what you want to get low costs.

Set up 2 ads and rotate them evenly to test which is working better. Always run 2 ads all the time. Edit the low performer and see if you can beat the winning ad weekly. Slow improvements will mean you end up with a great ad. To write your first ad, remember to have a benefit for the visitor. I usually look at google and see what other people are putting in the ads. Don’t copy exactly but use them for ideas.

Next week, add 50 more keywords and keep growing your campaign. Once you get 1000 keywords even if they have low searches it adds up. Your visitor count will grow. 1000 KWs with just 1 click a day is 1000 visitors.

Monitor your budget and don’t overspend until you see if you are getting opt ins and it is worth it.

For more keyword ideas. Use MLM company names, product names, and top mlm performer names like Daegan Smith, Anne Seig, Jon Budd, etc.

Adwords takes time to learn and build a performing campaign so take your time but do get one started.

Perry Marshall has a great course on Adwords. But you can learn a ton just by using the help and forums on Adwords itself.
